Buying Glasses Online vs. From Your Optician at Signature Eye Care: Why the Difference Matters

Ordering glasses online can seem pretty simple: choose a frame, enter your prescription, click “order,” and wait for them to arrive.
But there’s a lot more that goes into a great pair of glasses than the prescription printed on a piece of paper.
At Signature Eye Care, when you purchase glasses from us, you’re not just buying frames and lenses. You’re getting the expertise of trained opticians, advanced digital measurements, high-quality lens technology, professional fitting and adjustments, and, perhaps most importantly, a real person who is here to help if something doesn’t feel or look right.
Here’s why that makes such a difference.

Your Prescription Is Only Part of the Equation

Your glasses prescription tells us the lens powers needed to correct your vision, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.
Our experienced opticians are trained to understand different types of prescriptions and how those prescriptions interact with your frame, lens design, measurements, lifestyle, and visual needs.
This becomes especially important with more complex prescriptions, progressive lenses, higher prescriptions, prism, or patients who have very specific visual demands.
When you order glasses online, you’re often responsible for entering this information and making many of these decisions yourself. At Signature Eye Care, an optician helps guide you through the entire process.

Measurements Matter.  A Lot.

Have you ever put on a pair of glasses with your correct prescription and thought, “Something just doesn’t feel right”?
The prescription may be correct, but the measurements might not be.
Two important measurements used when making glasses are your Pupillary Distance (PD) and your Optical Center (OC) Height or Segment Height.
PD helps position the optical centers of your lenses correctly in front of your eyes. OC Height and Segment Height help determine the proper vertical placement of the lenses and are particularly important with certain prescriptions and multifocal or progressive lens designs.
At Signature Eye Care, our opticians use modern digital measuring technology along with their professional training to obtain careful, individualized measurements while you’re actually wearing the frame you’ve selected.
When ordering online, patients may be asked to measure their own PD or have someone else measure it for them. Other frame-specific measurements may be estimated, unavailable, or dependent on the ordering process.
A few millimeters can matter, especially when you’re wearing those glasses all day.

The Way Your Frames Fit Affects the Way You See

Choosing a frame isn’t only about finding something that looks great.
How a frame sits on your face can influence how your lenses perform.
Our opticians are trained in professional frame fitting and adjustments. They can evaluate how the frame sits on your nose, behind your ears, and in relation to your eyes, then make adjustments to improve comfort, stability, and lens positioning.
Too tight? Sliding down your nose? Sitting crooked? One lens closer to your eye than the other?
Those are things an experienced optician can address.
Our team is also trained in a variety of frame adjustments and repairs, so we’re here to help keep your glasses fitting properly long after the day you pick them up.

We’re an Essilor Experts Office

Signature Eye Care is proud to be an Essilor Experts office.
That means our team receives education on Essilor lens technologies and products so we can help patients understand the differences between lens designs and recommend options based on how they actually use their eyes every day.
One of the advanced progressive lens options we offer is Varilux® XR Track.
Today’s visual habits are different than they were even a decade ago. We constantly shift our attention between phones, computers, paperwork, dashboards, and objects at different distances.
Varilux XR Track is designed with near-vision behavior in mind, providing advanced progressive lens technology for the way patients use their vision today. Its technology can provide an increased volume of vision in the near zone compared with previous Varilux designs, helping create a more natural visual experience for progressive lens wearers.
And because progressive lenses depend heavily on accurate measurements and proper frame positioning, having a trained optician measure, fit, and troubleshoot them can be especially valuable.

Eyezen® Lenses for Our Digital World

Progressive lenses aren’t the only lenses that have evolved.
For patients who don’t need a progressive but spend a significant amount of their day on computers, phones, tablets, gaming systems, or other digital devices, we also offer Eyezen® Digital Single Vision lenses.
Eyezen lenses are designed with today’s visual demands in mind and can be an excellent option for adults, young adults, teens, and even children who spend significant amounts of time using digital devices.
Rather than simply choosing “single vision” from a menu, our opticians can talk with you about your work, school, hobbies, screen time, and visual habits to help determine which lens design may best fit your needs.

Sometimes the Problem Isn’t Just Blurry Vision

At Signature Eye Care, we also offer Neurolens®, a specialized lens technology designed for patients who may experience symptoms associated with eye misalignment.
Our team is educated to listen for symptoms such as:
  • Frequent headaches
  • Eye strain or fatigue
  • Light sensitivity
  • Dizziness or motion sensitivity
  • Neck and shoulder discomfort
  • Discomfort after prolonged computer or digital device use
If something in your conversation raises a concern, our opticians can communicate with your doctor and help determine whether further evaluation may be appropriate.
That’s something an online shopping cart simply can’t do.

And What Happens If Your New Glasses Don’t Feel Right?

This may be the biggest difference of all.
When you purchase glasses from Signature Eye Care, our relationship with you doesn’t end when you pick them up.
If your vision doesn’t seem right, come talk to us.
If your frames start sliding down, we can adjust them.
If something gets bent or needs a repair, bring them in.
If you’re having trouble adapting to your new lenses, our opticians can troubleshoot with you.
If there’s a warranty situation, we’ll help you navigate it.
Instead of trying to figure out whether the problem is your prescription, measurements, lens design, frame fit, or something else, you have an experienced team available to help determine what may be happening and find a solution.

You’re Not Just Buying Glasses. You’re Getting an Optician.

We understand why online glasses can be appealing. They’re convenient, there are countless frames to choose from, and sometimes the prices look hard to beat.
But when comparing glasses, it’s important to compare more than the frame and the prescription.
Consider the measurements.
Consider the lens technology.
Consider the fitting.
Consider the adjustments.
Consider the troubleshooting.
Consider the warranty support.
And most importantly, consider the expertise of the person helping you see your best.
At Signature Eye Care, our goal isn’t simply to sell you a pair of glasses. Our doctors and opticians work together to help make sure the eyewear you receive is appropriate for your prescription, your visual needs, your lifestyle, and your everyday life.
Because glasses aren’t just something you wear.
They’re something you look through all day, every day.
