Dry Eye: Summer Triggers & Relief

Summer is a season filled with sunshine, vacations, pool days, and outdoor adventures. But if your eyes have been feeling dry, irritated, or uncomfortable, you’re not alone. While many people associate dry eye with winter, the warmer months can actually make symptoms even worse. Understanding what triggers dry eye during the summer can help you protect your vision and enjoy the season comfortably.

Why Does Dry Eye Get Worse in Summer?

Several common summer activities and environmental factors can cause your tears to evaporate more quickly or irritate the surface of your eyes.
1. Air Conditioning
Whether you’re driving, working in an office, or relaxing at home, air conditioning removes humidity from the air. Lower humidity means your tears evaporate faster, leaving your eyes feeling dry and scratchy.
2. Wind and Outdoor Activities
Summer breezes may feel refreshing, but wind can quickly dry out the tear film that protects your eyes. Boating, cycling, hiking, and even riding in a convertible can all increase tear evaporation.
3. Pool Water
Chlorine helps keep pools clean, but it can also strip away the natural tear film that protects your eyes. Even if your eyes don’t look red, swimming may leave them feeling dry and irritated afterward.
4. Sun Exposure
Extended time in the sun can contribute to dryness, especially when combined with heat and wind. UV exposure can also affect your long-term eye health, making quality sunglasses an essential part of your summer routine.
5. Allergies
Summer allergens such as pollen, grass, and mold can cause itchy, watery eyes. Ironically, allergy symptoms and certain allergy medications can make dry eye symptoms even worse.

Common Symptoms of Dry Eye

Dry eye doesn’t always feel “dry.” Symptoms can include:
  • Burning or stinging
  • Gritty or sandy sensation
  • Redness
  • Blurred vision that comes and goes
  • Watery eyes (a response to irritation)
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Eye fatigue, especially after reading or using digital devices
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses comfortably
If these symptoms occur frequently, it’s time to have your eyes evaluated.

Simple Ways to Find Relief

Fortunately, there are several easy steps you can take to keep your eyes comfortable this summer.
Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water supports healthy tear production throughout your body.
Wear Quality Sunglasses
Wraparound sunglasses help shield your eyes from UV rays, wind, and airborne debris.  Check out Oakley’s new Players Collection, inspired by sport culture.

Use Artificial Tears
Lubricating eye drops can provide temporary relief by replacing moisture lost throughout the day. Choose preservative-free options if you use them frequently.
Take Digital Breaks
Even during summer, many of us spend hours on phones, tablets, or computers. Remember the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
Wear Swim Goggles
Protect your eyes from chlorine while swimming by wearing properly fitted goggles.  If you would like to order Prescription Ready Swim Goggles, let us know.  This is what they look like:

Manage Allergies Carefully
If allergies are contributing to your symptoms, talk with your eye doctor about the best treatment options. Some over-the-counter medications may worsen dryness.

When It’s Time to See Your Eye Doctor

Occasional dryness can often be managed at home, but persistent symptoms shouldn’t be ignored. Chronic dry eye can affect your quality of life and, if left untreated, may even damage the surface of your eyes.
During a comprehensive eye exam, we can determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and recommend personalized treatment options that may include prescription medications, specialized eyelid treatments, nutritional recommendations, or in-office dry eye therapies.
