Dry Eye Isn’t Just Annoying- Here’s Why It Matters

Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when tears evaporate too quickly. Environmental factors, certain medications, and prolonged screen use can contribute to the development of dry eye. Dry eye has become more common, even among younger individuals, largely due to increased screen time. When looking at computer screens or digital devices, there is a tendency to blink less frequently, which can exacerbate dry eye symptoms.
DES can lead to inflammation and damage to the ocular surface, resulting in chronic symptoms such as burning, stinging, redness, and blurry or fluctuating vision. If left untreated, dry eye can cause physical damage to the eye and lead to lasting visual and physical symptoms that may interfere with daily activities.
Fortunately, several effective treatments are available. Management strategies may include lubricating eye drops, warm compresses, lifestyle modifications, and prescription medications to help relieve symptoms and protect the ocular surface.
