How to Get the Most out of Your Vision Insurance before the Year Ends

How to Get the Most out of Your Vision Insurance before the Year Ends

Use Your Flex Spending & Vision Benefits Before They Expire.  Some Friendly Tips to Make It Easy.

It happens every year, you glance at the calendar, realize it’s already mid-December, and suddenly remember the Flex Spending dollars and Vision Benefits you haven’t touched all year. And now you’ve got just a couple of weeks left to squeeze in an eye exam and stock up on glasses or contacts before those hard-earned funds disappear on January 1st.
Take a deep breath. I’m here to help.
After 27 years in this industry, I’ve seen this movie many, many times, and I’ve gathered a few simple tips to help you make the most of your benefits year after year, without the last-minute stress.

1. Pre-Schedule Next Year’s Eye Exam Before You Leave This Year’s Appointment

December is the busiest month in the optical world. It’s not uncommon for schedules to fill fast, especially if you prefer seeing your favorite optometrist.
When you come in for your exam this December, have us set up your Pre-Appointment for next year right then and there. We’ll send you reminders ahead of time to make sure the date still works, and you get to walk into the new year with one less thing on your plate.

2. Shift Your Annual Exam Earlier in the Year

If your vision plan resets every calendar year, you can play this to your advantage.
For example: if you use your benefits in December 2025, they renew on January 1, 2026, which means you can schedule your next exam anytime starting in January.
To dodge the December rush altogether, try booking your annual exam in September or October instead. Those months are typically the slowest for the optical industry, meaning:
  • better appointment availability,
  • less waiting, and
  • more personalized optical styling help, without the holiday crowds.

3. Use Your Flex Dollars on a Second Pair

Many patients forget they can use FSA funds on multiple pairs. Need computer glasses? Sunglasses? A pair of Meta Sunglasses?  A Sporty pair for Pickleball?
December is a great time to treat yourself to that second pair you’ve been putting off.

4. Stock Up on Contact Lenses Before Prices Change

If you’re a contact lens wearer, don’t wait until January when manufacturer price adjustments often roll out. Order your supply now using your Flex Spending, and lock in the current pricing.

5. Upgrade Your Lenses While You Have Extra Funds

If you’ve ever been curious about blue-light protection, anti-fatigue lenses, polarized sun lenses, or premium progressives, Flex Spending is perfect for trying them. These upgrades can make a huge difference in comfort, especially if you spend long hours on digital screens.

6. Treat Your Eyes (and Yourself) to Quality Dry Eye Relief

Dry eye treatments, specialty drops, heated masks, and certain in-office therapies can often be purchased or applied using Flex Spending. If your eyes have been burning, watering, or feeling gritty, now is the time to invest in some real relief.

If you have questions about what your plan covers or how to maximize your benefits, our team is always here to help. Let’s make sure not a single dollar goes to waste — and that your eyes start the new year feeling cared for.

WHEN WAS YOUR LAST EXAM?

Regular eye exams are critical for detecting diseases and conditions early. Early detection is often the key to effective treatment.
