Your Vision Benefits Expire Soon: Don’t Let Them Go to Waste

It’s officially October, which means cooler weather, pumpkin everything, and the beginning of the end-of-year countdown.
But before the holiday season gets into full swing, there’s something important you may want to check:
Have you used your vision benefits this year?
Every year, we see patients at Signature Eye Care who realize in December that they still have unused vision insurance benefits or FSA funds. Unfortunately, by then schedules are filling quickly, the holidays are approaching, and there may not be much time left to use them.
That’s why October is a great time to check your benefits and schedule your eye exam.
Your Vision Benefits May Be “Use It or Lose It”
Many vision insurance plans renew on January 1. Depending on your specific plan, you may have benefits available toward:
  • A comprehensive eye exam
  • Prescription eyeglasses
  • New frames
  • Prescription lenses
  • Contact lenses
  • An annual contact lens supply
If you haven’t used your benefits yet, now is a good time to find out what you have available.
Remember: you’ve already paid for these benefits through your insurance plan. If they expire at the end of the year, you may be leaving money—and better vision—on the table.

Don’t Forget About Your FSA or HSA

Have money remaining in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)?
Many eligible vision expenses can be paid for using FSA or HSA funds, including eye exams, prescription glasses and contact lenses. Eligibility and rollover rules can vary by account, so it’s always a good idea to check the details of your particular plan.
If you’ve been putting off replacing those scratched glasses, ordering more contacts, getting prescription sunglasses, or purchasing that second pair you’ve been wanting, your available funds may help.

When Was Your Last Eye Exam?

Even if you feel like you’re seeing perfectly well, your annual eye exam is about more than updating your glasses or contact lens prescription.
During a comprehensive eye examination, your optometrist evaluates your vision as well as the health of your eyes.
And a lot can change in a year.
Changes in your prescription, dry eye, digital eye strain and other eye health concerns may develop gradually. Regular exams give your doctor an opportunity to identify changes and discuss them with you before they begin interfering with your everyday life.

Seeing 20/20 doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to skip your eye exam.

Maybe It’s Time to Upgrade Your Glasses

If you have frame or lens benefits remaining, this can also be a great opportunity to upgrade your everyday eyewear.
Today’s lenses can do much more than simply correct your prescription.
At Signature Eye Care, our doctors and opticians can recommend lens options based on how you actually use your eyes throughout the day, whether you’re working at a computer, spending hours on digital devices, driving, reading, or constantly switching between different viewing distances.
We offer options including:
Varilux® progressive lenses for patients who need clear vision at multiple distances.
Eyezen® lenses for patients whose eyes spend a significant amount of time focusing on computers, phones and other digital devices.
Neurolens® for appropriate patients experiencing symptoms associated with eye misalignment, such as headaches, eye strain and neck or shoulder discomfort.
And our experienced opticians take careful measurements and professionally fit and adjust your eyewear so your glasses aren’t just made correctly—they’re comfortable to wear, too.

Contact Lens Wearers: Check Your Supply

Be honest…
How many contact lenses do you actually have left?
If you’ve been stretching your supply or suddenly realizing you’re down to your last few boxes, now is a great time to take care of it.
Depending on your plan, you may have contact lens benefits remaining that can be applied toward your purchase.
Ordering an annual supply can also mean fewer last-minute moments of realizing, “Wait…that was my last pair!”

Why We Recommend Scheduling Before December

Every year, December becomes one of the busiest times for eye care offices as patients try to use their remaining benefits before December 31.
Our advice?
Don’t wait until the last week of the year.
Scheduling your appointment in October or November gives you more flexibility when choosing an appointment time and more time to select your eyewear, order your lenses, and take care of your eye-care needs before the holiday rush.

Let’s See What Benefits You Have Left

Not sure what your vision plan covers?
That’s okay.
Contact our team at Signature Eye Care, and we can help you determine what information you need from your vision plan so you can better understand your available benefits.
Whether you’re due for your annual eye exam, need new glasses, are running low on contacts, or simply want to make sure you’re not leaving unused benefits behind, now is a great time to get it taken care of.
Don’t let December 31 sneak up on you.

Schedule your eye exam with Signature Eye Care today and make the most of your 2026 vision benefits before the year is over.
